Understanding Tendon Injuries

Tendons are the tough, cord-like structures that connect muscles to bones and allow your fingers and hand to move. When a tendon is cut, torn, or pulled from the bone, you lose the ability to bend or straighten the affected finger.

Tendon injuries in the hand are among the most technically demanding surgeries in orthopaedics. The tendons in your hand run through narrow tunnels (called sheaths) and require precise surgical repair followed by a carefully guided rehabilitation programme. This is where fellowship-trained expertise makes a real difference in your outcome.

Types of Tendon Injuries We Treat

  • Flexor tendon injuries — you cannot bend your finger; often caused by deep cuts
  • Extensor tendon injuries — you cannot straighten your finger; caused by cuts, jams, or rheumatoid conditions
  • Mallet finger — the fingertip droops and cannot be straightened (extensor tendon detachment)
  • Jersey finger — inability to bend the fingertip (flexor tendon avulsion)
  • Tendon ruptures — from rheumatoid arthritis, chronic wear, or repeated steroid injections
  • Delayed tendon repairs — reconstruction using tendon grafts when primary repair is not possible

How Dr. Yadav Repairs Tendons

Dr. Yadav uses modern multi-strand suture techniques that create stronger repairs, allowing earlier, safer movement during rehabilitation — which is critical for preventing the stiffness that can limit hand function after tendon surgery.

For cases where the tendon cannot be directly repaired (delayed injuries or tissue loss), Dr. Yadav performs:

  • Tendon grafting — using a donor tendon from elsewhere in your body
  • Two-stage tendon reconstruction — placing a silicone rod first, then a tendon graft once the tunnel is ready
  • Tendon transfer — rerouting a working tendon to replace the function of the damaged one

Recovery & Hand Therapy

Tendon repair recovery requires close cooperation between surgeon and patient:

  • Week 1–4: Protective splinting with controlled early motion programme (modified Kleinert or Duran protocol)
  • Week 4–8: Active finger movement begins, splint use gradually reduced
  • Week 8–12: Progressive strengthening, resistance exercises
  • 3–6 months: Return to full activities including sports and manual work

Dr. Yadav personally supervises the rehabilitation protocol and adjusts it based on how your tendon is healing — this individualised approach is key to avoiding both re-rupture and stiffness.

Time Matters in Tendon Injuries

Tendon repairs performed within the first 1–2 weeks after injury have the best outcomes. If you have a cut to your hand and cannot bend or straighten a finger, seek specialist assessment as soon as possible.
